Environmental
Awareness Raising and Education in Sindh
This project is being undertaken with the assistance
of British High Commission, Pakistan. The aim is to promote environmental
awareness and education in Sindh among teachers, educators and
the public at large. This is primarily being done through the
development of awareness raising and teaching material on the
environmental issues in the province. The material includes a
resource pack for trainers, board books and a documentary on Sindh.
The resource pack would consist of booklets on
important flora and fauna of Sindh along with an overview of the
environment of the province. Furthermore, it would consist of
some case studies, which would provide the users with practical
examples on the topic.
The documentary film is being made to raise the
awareness of the general public and to serve as a teaching tool
for trainers and educators. To ensure that the issues highlighted
in the documentary reach a wider audience, board books highlighting
the same topics are also being developed. These would contain
written information in the local languages along with poster-sized
photographs. The board books would be especially useful in those
educational institutions and schools that may not have the requisite
facilities for viewing the video.
In addition to the above, an activity book Joy
of Learning was translated and printed in Sindhi.
This was launched at a workshop conducted in collaboration with
the Sindh University, Jamshoro and was also tested there.
Socio-economic
Analysis of Sea Intrusion
A study has been undertaken to assess the
impact of sea intrusion in the Indus Delta. This issue, which
is being termed as the worst environmental disaster in the history
of Pakistan, has caused the destruction of several thousand hectares
of land in the coastal districts of Thatta and Badin, destroying
prime agricultural land, contaminating aquifers and causing degradation
of coastal, deltaic and riverine ecosystems. This study analyzes
the ecological and socio-economic impacts of sea intrusion on
the population of the (selected) affected areas and the concurrent
losses sustained by the provincial and national exchequers.
Integrated
Coastal and Marine Resources Management and Poverty Reduction
in South Asia (ADB RETA)
The project is being undertaken under the Regional
Technical Assistance of Asian Development Bank (ADB) and in consultations
with the respective governments of India, Pakistan, Maldives and
Sri Lanka. Its aim is to reduce poverty by strengthening the management
of ecologically sensitive coastal and marine areas in South Asia
and promote regional co-operation among the four participating
countries.
At the national level, Pakistan would undertake
the following activities:
- Situational Analysis of the coastal and marine
areas of Pakistan
- Institutional, Policy and Legal Analysis
- Develop an Integrated Coastal Zone Management
(ICZM) Strategy
- Select a High Priority Area (HPA) to pilot test
the ICZM Strategy
- Develop an ICZM Management Plan for the HPA
- Community Participation/Development (HPA)
- Biodiversity Analysis (HPA)
- Economic Analysis (HPA)
- Assessment of the Mangrove Ecosystem of Pakistan
- Environment and Poverty Nexus Study (HPA)
- Database and Information Management for the whole
State
of Environment and Development of Sindh
State of Environment and Development of Sindh
is being developed to highlight all the major environmental issues
of the province. This document would be the first of its kind pertaining
to Sindh. As a prerequisite, various experts in their respective
fields are developing eighteen sector papers. After the sector papers
have been drafted they would be shared with the stakeholders through
workshops for their input and recommendations. The papers would
then be finalized and subsequently feed into the State of Environment
and Development of Sindh. |
